Day trip to Tuscan countryside

If my friends will agree I am thinking of taking a wine tour of Chianti region with Tours by Roberto. It is pricy for our budget so the others may not agree. Bus #365 goes through Chianti. I just do not know how do-able this would be to go to Greve wander that town and then take short hops getting off a nice little towns with a stop for lunch somewhere. This would not match the experience of the tour I am sure but would we get the flavor of the area and are the towns on the bus route worth visiting?

I would check the bus schedules to be sure you can work in a couple of stops - Rome2Rio.com has information on time and links to transportation schedules/tickets.

I've done this by car with friends, if your friends are willing to rent a car together, that would eliminate some uncertainty.

Is this our Roberto who is giving the tours?

I don't know but I don't think so. He is recommended by RS in Florence book. I think he lives in Siena

It's not our Roberto. There's also a Roberto in Assisi who guides.

We (my husband, 18 yr-old daughter & myself)also want to take a day trip to Siena, we are staying in Florence. A friend of mine highly recommended a tour called "Wine Tour in Tuscany" run by Donatella. She got rave reviews on Trip Advisor, unfortunately she's already booked in June when we are there, June 25. I really like the "small group" concept with a local tour guide. Similar tour suggestions from anyone? Also, what would be the best way to get to Siena from Florence? Thanks!

What would be the best way to get to Siena from Florence?

Bus from Florence bus station drops you off near the Siena historical center.
Better than the train, the train station is too far from the historical center of Siena.

siena is a great day trip -- easy to do on your own. The bus drops you in the historic center and you can return anytime you want (note the last two trips and aim for at least the second to last so you don't get stranded -- the times are listed on the bus stop. They run 2 or 3 an hour) The Torre Mangia, the Cathedral, the town hall, the Campo -- all just beautiful.

We really enjoyed our tour with Tours by Roberto. It was well worth the price! Took away teh stress of finding your way on country roads, everyone can taste wine and have wine at lunch as no one has to be the DD.

Thanks for all the feedback. Our small group of three have differing opinions. One, who has offered to drive, strongly wants to rent a car but the bus is an option. The bus however will just take us to and fro Siena, or does it? The car gives more flexibility. We are thinking the tour is too focused on wine and wine making as well as being pricy. So here are my questions now. Renting a car: Where near the edge of town accessible by public transport and near the S222 scenic route through Tuscany to Siena can one rent a car for the day? Any advice there would be welcome.

Thanks folks. I just got detailed info on car rental from Roberto on a different post specifically about car rental. He answered all my questions about the car issue. He is certainly a wonderful resource on this forum.
