I will be in Florence and Rome, 4 days each, in late May and would like to take a day trip to see and put my feet in the Mediterranean. Obviously the route from Rome is shorter, but I see on other threads this could be the busier route. Any input on from which city to go, specific places on the coast, method of transport, etc? Thanks!

You bet. And FWIW, from my experience late May is still early in the beach season for Italy, so you won't be competing with many others. In the middle of August, on the other hand, all bets are off. Happy travels.
