Day trip to Sorrento or Amalfi

We are staying in Positano and are considering a day trip to one of these places. Which is better and what is the most reliable mode of transportation from Positano?
Thanks in advance

Both are very diff from one another. I love Sorrento, views, restaurants, el passigiata, shopping galore.
U can take either the public bus from the main road, or best if weather is ok take the ferry. Wonderful views of coastline. Schedules are critical to have in hand. Otherwise may need to rely on a taxi $$.
If u are into hiking visit ridge beauty Ravello by bus and hike down trail to Amalfi.

Sorrento is OK but not as nice as Positano. Ravello is worth the effort to get there. Getting around the AC is tedious or expensive or both, especially from May to September. Ferry to Capri for the day?

Neither is necessarily "better," as they are very different. Think of Sorrento as a busy resort town whereas Amalfi and Ravello will be much more laid back. Both options are interesting in their own way, so "better" depends on your interests. Buses to Positano start in Sorrento and Amalfi, so it may be best to take the ferry to whichever place you decide to visit and the bus back. That way you'll get a seat on the bus (or be first in line for the next bus) and you won't have to worry about a full bus not stopping as it passes through Positano. Note that Positano has 2 bus stops, one at the very top of town and one at the bottom near the hotels and beach, so be sure to use the stop closest to your lodgings. Otherwise, you'll have a long steep walk up or down, or a short pricy taxi ride.

I would take a ferry to Amalfi Town. It is a delightful trip and personally I liked Amalfi better than sorrento.

I vote for Ravello over Sorrento or Amalfi. I love the beauty and charm of Ravello.

If the only two options are Amalfi or Sorrento--then my vote is for Sorrento! I love the town, great mix of things to do, restaurants and the beautiful ocean.

I would highly recommend taking the city sightseeing bus over the Sita public buses. For a few euros more, you get a bus with a/c or at least fans and a seat. My husband and I both got sick on the bus from Sorrento to Positano, we were packed very tightly together and no circulating air at all. I know the city sightseeing bus is a little “touristy” but next time, it will be our vehicle of choice.
