Day trip to Santa Magdalena, Vilnoss from Ortisei

Hello,
This is an early planning for August 2026.
We plan to stay in Ortisei for 7 nights, will rely on buses/train for our transportation.
I really want to see Santa Magdalena and the church of st John Ranui. Is this doable day trip by bus from Ortisei?
I also want to hike Adolf Munkel trail. I understand that to reach the trailhead, i need to take a bus.
Is taking a taxi more practical for this trip?
Can this be done in one day? Or do it in 2 different days?
If we already plan to take the 3 lifts in Ortisei and do easy hikes there, is going to Adolf Munkel trail worth it?

Thanks,

It is 1:15 to 1:40 hours each way by bus to Santa Magdalena Ranui. The Munkel trailhead is not accessible by public transportation so you’d need to get a taxi to and from. I don’t know how hard that might be to arrange. Bear in mind the hike it 3+ hours so with bus to and from Ortisei, a visit to the chapel, and the hike, you are looking at a minimum of 7-8 hours, and I think that is conservative.

There are many many hikes in the Val Gardena requiring less effort. Look at the Panorama Trail on the Alpe di Siusi as an alternative in the moderately strenuous category, or even the Hans and Paula Steger Trail which we found to take slightly more time than the website implies but there is a great stop for lunch at Lanzinerschwaige.

Even easier to access, the trail from Ciampinoi in Selva to Passo Sella with return by bus. So many options I cannot list them all here.

Hi Holly,
We went to Ortisei last summer, and I had wanted to do this very same day trip using public transportation. (It ended up feeling too complicated, so we didn't do it.) But when I was researching beforehand, I contacted Taxi Ivan and inquired about their rates for transportation. They quoted me 98 Euro for a one way ride to Santa Magdalena from Ortisei. I was thinking at the time that I might book them for one way, then take public transportation back, rather than try to do the whole trip by public transportation. You might also be able to pay more and have them do the round trip for you. Or, another option that might be easier would be to rent a car for one day. Here is the email for Taxi Ivan, if you want to contact them:

Have a fun trip!!
