We will be traveling by train to Bologna in mid-October and plan to stop in Modena for a day on our way there. What are the highlights you recommend seeing or doing during a day in Modena. Also, is there a place convenient to the train station to check bags for a day?

If you are coming for the basalmic vinegar, I would schedule a cellar/attic lunch tour. Otherwise, the options mentioned are good.
