Does anyone know if we have to go through the reentry process if we drive over to Lugano for the day from Lake Como?
Also if you have any tips on things to do there. We're going next week.
Thank You!
I went there 2 weeks ago by train. I am Canadian and we have to fill out the Passenger Locator form ( https://app.euplf.eu/#/ ) before the day trip if you plan to go back to Italy...if you don't plan to reenter Italy, then it's not necessary. They will not always ask for it, but I have seen the authorities and ask randomly people for their documents and if they are outside of the EU, the passenger Locator form needed also to be shown in their system. So if you don't fill it out, they may refuse your reentry. Not sure if the Passenger locator form applies to US citizens, but I suspect you do have to do it. Also bring your passport, they don't always ask for it, but occasionnally they do.
I suspect everything I said applies to drivers too.
As for what to do in Lugano, I went first to Monte San Salvatore...I highly recommend it, you get the best views in town. For more info, you can check out https://www.montesansalvatore.ch/en/
Once you get all your nice pictures done, you can go to Parco Ciani which is close to the train station there, it's a beautiful park and nearby you have a pier in which you can get a viewing tour by boat on the lake.
Take the road from Menaggio to Lugano (Strada Statale SS340), it runs along the Lake Lugano, although a good portion is through a tunnel (the old route, not in the tunnel, is more scenic, but takes a bit longer). From Menaggio it's about 45 min (via the tunnel route).
There are no entry requirements between Italy and Switzerland and there will be no border check point on that road.
