We leave next week for our first trip to Italy! We will be driving from Cortona to Portofino and want to stop off in Lucca and explore the town for a few hours on our way out to the coast. Since we will have a rental car and I know many cities have forbidden zones you can't drive in, I wonder if anyone can advise on the parking situation in Lucca? Is there a lot outside the city we can use and then walk in? Also, are there any "must see" things while we are in town? We plan to walk or rent bikes to explore the top of the wall but any other great things to see/do/eat?
Park outside of town. If you look at the map of Lucca in Rick's book you will see two parking areas on what functions as the ring road. The last thing you want to do is drive inside the walls. We just followed the list of stuff in Rick's book plus a little wandering and had a good time.
Lucca is a walled xity. There are large lots putside the xity walls, very few places to park inside.
Once you get settled and head into the lovely walled town, enjoy just "getting lost" and or rent bikes to enjoy the scenery. We were there for a few hours, but would spend a couple nights next time.
We parked just outside the wall in a public parking lot. It's easy to follow the signs to these lots.
Renting bikes is a lot of fun.
