Day trip to lake Garda from Verona?

We are based in Verona a few days and a train trip to Lake Garda looks like fun. Any advice on a pretty town to start in thats relatively easy to get to, or a destination to ferry to? A lakeside hike may be nice too. Thanks.

You can take the train to Peschiera (15 minutes) then walk to the ferry dock & visit some of the lakeside villages.
When we were there last October, we purchased the ferry day pass & enjoyed the day visiting Garda, Bardolino & Lazise.
You can also visit Sirmione but we chose not to.

Here is the website for ferry schedules:http://www.navlaghi.it/eng/g_comearrivare.html

Enjoy your trip!

We just went to Pescheira, walked around the city, had lunch on the canal, watched the boats on the lake. Pretty much a lazy day, but we needed it!

Reporting back after our trip to Lake Garda, acting on current replies and earlier posts I searched. From Verona caught train to Peschiera. Walked 10-15 minutes to docks and caught round trip ferry to Malcesine where we had a leisurely lunch and strolled awhile. It was an incredibly scenic relaxing trip and got us off our aching feet for much of day (13 hours total round trip from Verona). There are faster boats and closer destinations to choose from too. Highly recommended.

carolina,

It's great to hear that everything worked out so well. I didn't see this post in time, but would have suggested exactly what you did. I found that Peschiera seems to be the best location for access to the boats, and it's a really scenic town as well.

Sirmione you can take the ferry there from either of the 2 stops on the lake for the train ( Peschiara or Denzano ).

Check the ferry times especially for returns if you want to check out the northern lake towns like Malecinse which is a couple hours round trip.

Yes, but Sirmione is a darn nuisance to get to in order to board the Ferry. You still have to travel to either Desenzano or Peschiera and then take a Taxi or Bus to Sirmione. Leaving from Peschiera is the easiest solution as the Ferries are based there and access is much easier.

Why necessarily a train? I took a 1-hour bus from Verona right to Sirmione, walked around there a lot, to the ruins far beyond the touristy center, then took the ferry, in my case to Bardolino and then a bus back to Verona from there. Nice day.
