We will be in Stresa in September and would like to take a day trip to lake como. Saw a couple private tours online but don’t seem to be available. Any recommendations for a private tour company or best way to do this?

Starting September 15, you can get to Varenna from Stresa by regional train from Stresa in 3 hours with a train change in Milan for 13 EUR. Before that date it involves train replacement buses because of railway construction work

Too far as a day trip and right now transportation options are not the best.

Too far even in normal circumstances. Stay in Stresa and enjoy Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, which are just as beautiful. Visit Lake Como only if you have time for at least one overnight there.
