Hello! My fiance and I are spending our honeymoon in the Amalfi Coast and will be in Sorrento for 5 nights! We've read about Ischia and it sounds really neat! We'd like to know if anyone has been and their thoughts about a day trip from Sorrento to Ischia. Also, did you take the one boat to/from Sorrento, or a private boat that you booked? We'd love any recommendations for transportation and thermal spas, too! Thanks for your help!
Molly, I was recently in Ischia and it was very relaxing compared to Capri. I took the hydrofoil from Naples, however, so I can't tell you about boats from Sorrento, but it was an easy day trip from Naples.
From Sorrento there is one boat a day to (9.25 am) and from Ischia (17.25 pm), cost 34.50 euro pp return ticket. You will see it changes after 15 Sept but usually not much if at all. http://www.alilauro.it/orari.php?id_tratta=11:12&lingua=english&cartella=orari You can also go via Naples by boat from Sorrento but obviously that will take longer. http://www.alilauro.it/orari.php?id_tratta=9:10&lingua=english&cartella=orari Alternatively you could take a guided tour from these people. http://www.goldentours.it/en/ischia.php
Zoe or Linda: do you know if the Campania Art Card is accepted for bus transportation on the Isle of Ischia? Also, will the ferry schedules be very different later on in September? I am sure the water conditions dictate the crossings but, in general, do they run in late September? sorry Molly for snagging your post.
The boats run in late September but perhaps not as frequently as during the highest season months (June-July-August). Water conditions in September are fine.
Linda - yes you can use the travel card on Ischia but not for sea crossings. http://www.campaniartecard.it/transport.cfm Crossings from Naples to Ischia (and Sorrento to Naples) will, weather permitting, run year round. The island residents need to get out and about.
Zoe & Linda: Thanks for the additional information. You two are great. Ciao!
Thanks all of the information! Does the guided tour company have their own private boat, or do they just go on the public one? Also, are there any recommendations for spas on Ischia?
Up till last year they did a mini-cruise to Ischia (on the lines of their Blue Cruise to Capri) but it looks like they have dropped it for this year. The blurb says that they use the scheduled hydrofoil service and provide a stopping bus tour around the island. It is some years since we went over to Ischia and we caught a local bus that did a circular route. Even though it was in May it did get busy and we had to stand for some legs of the journey. As it was a while ago cannot give reliable details. There is an official set price for a 3 hour taxi tour, unfortunately the prices (80 euro) are from 2011 and don't know how much time you would get at various stops if any. http://www.alilauro.it/taxi/2011/ServizioTaxiIschia.pdf BTW Ischia was the first place in Italy where we were offered whipped cream on top of our Cappuccino, the island is very popular with Germans!
My wife and daughter just spent a day at the Nogombo Spa on the island and loved the day. She would recommend spending a whole day there. 15 thermo pools plus a beautiful private beach. There restaurant was great and their fruit was awesome.
