Hi Everyone,
Im taking my mom to Rome for her birthday and we'll be there in just a few short weeks March 6-March 17. We will be spending the bulk of our time in Rome with a few day trips planned out. I have most of the major sights already booked (Colosseum, Vatican, Borghese Gallery). I've been trying to keep most of the trip flexible and wondering if I should buy train tickets to Florence already? Our plan is to go to the Palazzo Vecchio and was also wondering if I should buy tickets ahead of time. I know its not as crowded as the Uffizi or Academia but since its a day trip, it may save some time.
Go with the flow, I think u will be fine to buy tain tix as u wish during that time frame.
But allow enuf time for Florence if u wish to, it is a great place to visit.
I have seen a longish ticket-buying line at the Palazzo Vecchio, but did not wait in it to see how long it took. I think you could still buy tickets online a day or two ahead, if that was when you decided. http://museicivicifiorentini.comune.fi.it/en/palazzovecchio/.
Full-priced train tickets cost about 47 euros each way, per person in the cheapest class of service. The cheapest advance-purchase discounts are probably already sold out for your travel date (I tested March 8), so the price to book now would be 35. Trains are not likely to sell out, so it's this 12 euro price difference (x 4), that's the most likely difference. http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Thank you JS and Laura for your responses. As I was laying out the itinerary on an excel sheet, I realized there were only 2 days that were best for the Florence day trip. That actually helped a lot. I actually lived in Florence during college for a study abroad program so I've done the major museums. I'm excited to just wander around and see what has changed.
