We are planning to do a day trip to Cinque Terre from Florence in early June. I have been looking at a few tours on the viatour website that look fun and convenient. But looking over the train schedules, we could easily save time and money doing it on our own. Little more planning involved, but more freedom as well. With only one day in CT, would booking the visit with a tour guide be the way to go? Or would doing it on our own be a better experience? It is our first visit to Italy and so we definitely appreciate any help or advice. Thank you!
To me, that is an easy do-it-yourself trip. Most people go there to do a bit of walking (check to see which paths between towns are open, and expect to pay a fee) and see the picturesque towns. I think it's easily manageable on your own. Crowds can be a real problem according to folks who've been to Cinque Terre recently, and going by yourself gives you a bit more flexibility in moving around.
jeffe,
That's an easy trip from Florence and doing it on your own would provide you with more flexibility both in timing and sights you might want to see in that area. If you take a tour, you'll be herded around with the rest of the group and will have to follow their schedule.
I'd suggest starting in Riomaggiore and working your way north using the local trains, ending in Monterosso where you can enjoy a fine dinner before returning to Florence. As the previous reply mentioned, crowds may be a problem during the day, but you'll probably find that's worse in some towns than others. You likely won't have to deal with as many crowds in Riomaggiore, Manarola or Corniglia, but there could be huge crowds in Vernazza depending on whether there are any cruise ships or tour groups in the area that day. While the main street especially in the new town in Monterosso can be thick with tourists in the busy part of the day, the town is large enough that it's possible to get away from the hordes.
Last time I took a day trip from Florence, I didn't get back to Florence until about midnight. I wanted to have dinner at one of my favourite restaurants overlooking the ocean as the sun set, so didn't mind getting back late. Be sure to note the times for the return trains to Florence, so that you don't miss the last train back!
Definitely do it your self! Get an early start before the crowds, and stay late after the crowds. It is a wonderful place at night. The towns themselves are relatively small (except Monterosso) and you could see all 5 in a day.
Just got back from Italy, this is for sure a "choose your own adventure" location in my opinion. Each of the 5 towns is unique, and you will likely find one that fits you best and spend more time there. They are similar enough, but the "vibe" each has is different. Early morning and evening are best for sure!
