I'd like to do a day trip to the Chianti region with my family (husband and 2 kids - 8 and 10) from Florence when we visit Italy in April, and maybe stop in a couple of towns nearby (any recommendations) and I've seen several tour options through viator etc, but ideally I would like to rent a car (is that advisable) so we can do it ourselves at our own pace and have the luxury of stopping where we like for pictures, and spending time in spots that we enjoy as opposed to having someone else set the pace for us.
Has someone else done something similar (that isn't a full day itinerary) with young kids that they can share, or have any suggestions/tips on how to get started? vineyards you'd recommend visiting?
Thanks so much.
We did such a trip with friends a couple of years ago following, more-or-less, this plan from Dall’uva, a wine importer (the owner is a friend of mine). Osteria Le Panzanelle was a perfect lunch stop.
We did fine with a car, no traffic to speak of in late March, but our friend got a speeding ticket a few months later, apparently from a zone very close to the Hertz rental location, so just mind the signs. My husband and I always say it takes two to drive in Italy as one of us tries to pay attention to all road signs as well as navigates. It takes the full time attention of two people!
Laurel has given you excellent advice. For tastings at the wineries, I recommend you and your husband split the glass. Then buy a few bottles to enjoy back in your lodging. The limit in Italy is .05, it's much higher in the states. Or use a driver.
If you've never driven in Italy, read this, and download their e book especially for signage and speed limits.

Which ever way you decide, you and your family will have a wonderful time.
We will be renting a car in Florence and doing a self drive tour. We are just going to brave it and see what happens!
