Day Trip to Capri or

Is is worth it to take a day trip out of Rome to Capri. I assume it is too far to go to the Amalfi Coast for the day. Thank you. Elaine

Elaine, It's certainly feasible to take a day trip from Rome to Capri, but it would be a long day trip and only allow a partial day on the island. You'll have to decide if that's worth the effort. If you did decide to take the trip, you could travel to Naples via fast train (~1H:40M), Taxi to the Molo Beverello Port area and then take a Hydrofoil (Aliscafo) to Capri (travel time ~40M). If you departed Rome at 06:45, you could possibly be in Capri by 10:15 (if the connections all work out). It's also possible to go to the Amalfi Coast for the day, but keep in mind that the "Amalfi Coast" covers a considerable area. Which town did you have in mind? You could (for example) travel from Rome to Sorrento using regular trains and the Circumvesuviana. However the travel time is about 2-3 hours each way, so it would be a long day and would only allow a partial day in the city. That particular trip is popular with those wanting to tour Pompeii. Happy travels!

Elaine, One addition to my previous reply...... You might also have a look at This Website which provides "small group" tour options for both Capri and the Amalfi Coast. The tours seem to get good reviews, and the Capri tour seems to provide the better part of a day on the island. These tours aren't cheap though, and the duration is usually 12-14 hours, so keep that in mind. I've never travelled with this tour company, so can't provide any "pro & con" comments on the quality, but they certainly look good. Cheers!

Elaine, this is not a question of trains but one of distance. Few places in the world provide rail services to islands so you have to expect additional travelling time. Unless you have a private plane or helicopter Capri is not an ideal day trip from Rome. Yes, it's feasible if you're willing to spend half or your day in transport. But not something I'd recommend.

Wow. Thank you for the information. I had checked to see if there were any Gray Line tours to the Amalif Coast, before I read your reply. I think it is way too far and complicated. The trains in Italy aren't exactly like the trains in London, Paris or anywhere in Switzerland either. Thank you for printing all that information though. I will show it to my husband and Im sure he will agree it is too much trouble. We will just find something to keep us in Rome instead. Elaine

Our experience with trains in Italy is that they are exactly like the trains in other parts of Europe with the exception of Spain which has a more limited system.

I LOVE the Amalfi Coast and Capri, but I personally think it's too far as a day trip from Rome. I hear that Orvietto is a wonderful day trip from Rome. It's a medieval hill town in Tuscany.
