Day trip to Capri from Rome

I will be traveling to Rome June 2nd for about 3 or 4 days. We would really like to visit Capri. Looking for the best options to do this. We will not have a rental car. Thank you.

You know that they're a hundred and fifty miles apart, right?

Guided day trips are available (13 hrs 7:30am to 8:30pm - approx), costs about $180/person - several tour companies do them. If you're talking about doing it yourself, there would be a lot to coordinate - train to Naples, getting to the harbor, excursion boat to Capri, etc. - you'd have to check into all that to compare and see if tour prices are worth it to you. If you're only going to be in Rome 3-4 days and it's your first time there, I would not do this. If you've been to Rome before and you want to spare a whole long day, well then it's up to you if it's worth it. I loved Capri and it's worth going to if you're in Naples or Sorrento, but I wouldn't do it from Rome - just my personal opinon.

Hi,
I found a tour to Capri from Rome at Viator.com. for $178. After studying the details, I may just do it on my own. The fast trains go to Naples, then you ferry to Capri. It may be a long day but a visit to the Blue Grotto might be worth it.

I loved Capri but I agree it does not make a good day trip from Rome. Also, I have been there three times and I was never able to go to the Blue Grotto due to weather. All three times. And it wasn't even raining or storming or really windy. It must be a boating thing. Several friends and family have had similar experiences. I don't know if this is just bad luck. But if that is your main purpose for going to Capri, that would be a huge letdown. If you are wanting to see the coast or spend some time on the water, there are plenty of beaches or lakeside towns that make much easier day trips. Santa Marinella is a nice beach and easy train ride from Termini. I also like Lake Bracciano. It is a little more of a hike to get to the beach from the train station and the beach is sort of a dirt beach (dirt, not dirty). But the water feels very clean and it is gorgeous.

Have to agree that if the blue grotto is your reason for going you may be disappointed by not being able to go because of high water (if it's too high, the boats can't get safely into the grotto). We were able to go to the blue grotto and it's kinda cool, but after all the hype I was underwhelmed, if that had been my only reason for going I would have been disappointed.

OK, I'm going to be the contrarian here. I did a day trip from Rome to Capri on my first trip to Rome, wherein I only had 3 other days in the city -- and I thought it was completely worth it, even without the Grotto, which we didn't get to enter due to choppy seas!

There probably are other great beaches closer to Rome, but I just thought Capri was magical. We took a boat tour that circled the entire island and loved every minute of it.

We used a tour company, but knowing what I do now, and currently planning a 2nd trip to Italy, I think I would now do this day trip on my own to save money and work at my own pace.

Note: it is certainly a long day out. And if you have a long list of MUST do's in Rome, then sure, it might be worth reconsidering. But again, even without the Grotto, I had absolutely no regrets about my day trip to Capri. It's just an enchanting place.

Good for you! Did you happen to go to Anacapri and ride the chair lift to Monte Solaro? I was curious about that.

We did go to Anacapri, which we liked, because it was a bit quieter than Capri, and you could get lost wandering around the side streets and taking in the atmosphere.

Unfortunately, we did not get to ride the chairlift, but I'm hoping to do that on my 2nd visit there, this May. :)

Thank you for your replies! I love this forum. Capri may have to wait for my next trip. Sounds beautiful . If unable I may try for a more local beach, since I will not be renting a car.
