Has anyone taken a day trip from Milan to Brig on the high speed train? How was it? We are considering this, but I fear that mid April might be too cold, as we will not have our heavy winter coats.

Milan to Brig is not a High Speed train. It takes 2 hours. Brig is a nice town, in a deep and wide valley, but i am not sure I would spend a whole day excursion just to go there.
I would recommend Lugano. It has boat trips and a cable car up its "local" mountain.
Or Bellinzona (3 castles).
