Day trip to Bolzano?

We have two weeks in Italy and I am wondering if using a day for a day trip to/from Bolzano is worthwhile. We've never been to Italy before so we want to spend time in all the usual places, but getting into the mountains even for a peek seems inviting. Thank you in advance for comments.

Bolzano is an attractive city with one unique feature, Utzi the Iceman, in the archaeological museum. It's not so much in the mountains, more at the beginning of them. That being said, if it were my first trip to Italy, and only for two weeks, I'd focus on more time in the "usual places" and leave Bolzano for another trip. Rome, Florence, Venice, and a couple of Tuscan or Umbrian hill towns are more than enough to keep you busy for the time you have. Then there are the Lakes area, Amalfi Coast, Veneto, etc., etc. BTW, the Alto Adige is a German-speaking autonomous province, culturally very different from the rest of Italy, another reason to give it more time on another trip.
