Day trip to Austrian Alps from the Dolomites?

Any recommendations for what to see, scenery-wise? I'm a landscape photographer, and would love to see the Austrian Alps while we're in the Dolomites (in May). It looks like it's just an hour or two away, so we thought we'd try to go on one of the days we're there.

Thanks!!

Where are you staying in the Dolomites? How would you be traveling - car/train/bus?

I guess that would help. We're staying in Ortesei and will have a car

The drive to Innsbruck from there would be beautiful, over the Brenner Pass, and Innsbruck is a good place for a day trip. I have no personal experience with driving over the pass and not sure what the weather in May is like there but maybe someone else here will have good information on that. I've only been there in September and we took a bus but it was amazing.

Also there are several regular posters here with lots of experience with that part of Austria and may have other suggestions for where you should go.

No experience yet, but I am planning a July day trip from Cortina D'Ampezzo to Innsbruck and a short trip over to Hinterhornalm and Walder Alm.

Note that if you drive on any motorways in Austria other than the one from Brenner to Innsbruck, you need a toll sticker. There's info on that here.

A few years ago, in late May, we drove the other way from the Dolomites (Castlerotto to St. Moritz via Tirano) and we encountered snow in Switzerland, but the roads were clear all the way, FYI.

Hi,

We've done the drive between Val Gardena and Innsbruck (actually Hall in Tirol) many times, as early as late April and a few times in Oct. and Dec. It's about a 1:30 drive from Ortisei to Innsbruck. The Brenner Pass is actually a multi-lane highway. Be SURE to buy the Austrian Vignette (toll sticker for driving on highways). The drive, nearing Innsbruck, is incredibly scenic. Head up to Igls for really nice views (cute village also). From the grounds of Schloss Ambras (no need to pay for the tour, but we liked it) you can get nice views overlooking Innsbruck and the alpine backdrop. The peacocks that roam the grounds of Ambras are very photogenic :)
