Need some imput. Going to Rome(6 nights) then to Florence, CT, Siena, Orvieto and then back to Rome (total 17 days). Thinking of taking a day trip from Rome to either Assisi or Viterbo. Second trip to Rome and CT but first to other listed cities. Would like advice on chosing Assisi or Viterbo? Thanks
For us, Assisi was a great surprise. It was recommended by a friend so we took a day trip out of Florence. It was just so beautiful. We should have booked an overnight there. Wonderful art in the basilica and churches there. It's a bit out of the way but for us, it was worth it.
I haven't been to Viterbo, so no opinion on it, but my group really enjoyed Assisi.
Viterbo makes a better day trip because it is a lot closer to Rome. Assisi is 3 hours each direction - too much time on a train and not enough sightseeing. You could easily do Orvieto as a day trip from Rome, only an hour by train.
Thanks everybody, I do need to think about spending approx. 7.5 hrs. waiting and riding the train. We have been to Tivoli which was a wonderful day trip. Have been to Sorrento and surrounding areas. Already plan on going to Ostia Antica. Any other suggestions of day trips from Rome?
