Day trip to Assisi from Siena or overnight stay?

We have secured 2 nights at an Agritourismo in Volterra (our first visit) followed by 3 nights at an agritouismo in Sienna (our second visit) and have rented a car this adventure. Reviewing the map, we realized we are within reach of Assisi on our route to a Florence. The question is, do we drive from Siena to Assisi (google map says 1 hr 43 min, our Siena host says 1 hour) on our way to Florence (google map says 2 1/2 hr drive, our Siena host says 1 hour)? Do Italians drive faster than the average person behind the wheel? We don’t, and we enjoy the scenic route. Ordonyou recommend we relinquish one night, adding 20Euro each night to our Siena lodging, and spend a night in Assisi? Our Agritourismo in Siena is very comfy. We are 67, celebrating life on a 3 month long exploration. Stay, or chop it up? Thank you, fellow travelers, for your experienced wisdom.

I enjoy Assisi very much. We stayed 3 nights but then i know the saints history and contributions. It is a beau5iful village with alot to see. Realize parking is difficult. So i would say it is worth the drive to see it. Ck with michelin.com for miles. Driving in tuscany is not speedy but usually relaxed.

We spent 3 nights in Assisi and really enjoyed it. We had parking but the streets are very narrow. Be aware that speed is checked electronically in many places and you may receive a ticket at a later date. Enjoy your not rushed trip!

I would expect the longer travel time. If you do it right, you want to ramble.

We stayed in Greve and explored the countryside, including Volterra and Siena. We cut Lucca and Assisi from our itinerary as day trips because we felt the drive was too far. It was a hard decision since we attend St. Francis Episcopal.

We are also 67 and I am envious of your ability to do a 3 month exploration! Where are you headed after Siena? Can you tack on Assisi after? Since you've been to Siena before and it sounds like you've not been to Assisi, I'd consider cutting Siena short and stay in Assisi.

Assisi is lovely but on no map would it be on the way to Florence from Siena.

Thank you for the insight. We are leaning toward letting go of our 3rd night in Sienna and driving to Assisi for the sights, the sunset and a good night’s rest before traveling north to Florence. Wishing all good travel.

ViaMichelin estimates the 76-mile drive from Siena to Assisi at 1 hr. 46 min., and it is thought to be generally optimistic. The 103-mile drive from Assisi to Florence is estimated at 2 hr. 15 min. Both of those times are for the fastest route.

I think a night in Assisi is a great idea. It is a beautiful place.
