Okay, I've planned our itinerary. 4 days Rome, 2 days Florence, 2 days Venice, 2 days Bellagio, and 4 1/2 days Tuscany... Now, I am regretting not being able to see the Amalfi Coast. This is the one place I really wanted to go, but didn't see how I could fit it in. The time in Tuscany isn't really optional as we'll be there for a wedding. So, I'm thinking that I might be able to do a day trip from Rome. Can anyone recommend a company? We're not interested in Pompeii. Thanks!
FYI, it's about 4 hours one way from Rome to Sorrento, the 'jump' off place to see the Amalfi coast. This region deserves more than a day trip, best left for your next time in Italy. Be happy with what you have planned, enjoy Rome, Florence, Venice, etc and plan for the Amalfi coast on your next trip.
I do the drive often when we go over...it is too tiring (IMHO) to go for just the day...the drive is not bad...but 3:30-4hours just to Sorrento (!) and then, much longer if you want to see any of the coast or Capri...you need at LEAST one night...besides...way too much to try to squeeze in in Rome! Save it for the next trip :-)
Dear Joyce,
I am also planning a short trip in Italy but will be based mainly out of Rome. I fell in love with the Amalfi Coast many years ago but learned long ago that driving it wasn't my smartest option since i'm scared of driving along cliffs! So I searched really hard for a good tour company. I booked a tour with
Viator tours which is a very well respected tour company throughout Europe, and they have a small minibus 14 person tour that takes people from central Rome doen to the Pompei Ruins, Amalfi Coast to Positano and Ravello, and then back to Rome in one day. The cost for one person was $205.00 USD and very cheap for what you're getting! If you want more information check out:
www.viator.com and look under Rome.
Thanks! - Julie

Deinately you can do this trip. We had a private guide in Rome and he said he did one day trips down to amalfi...The drive is beautiful. The road is nothing like described when you are in a car. It is absolutely beautiful and worth the day You can stop in Positano and have lunch.....If you want a private guide...it would be more expensive and I would have to look up his information.....email me if you want it.
