Day trip to almafi coast from sorrento bus or ferry?

My husband and I will be staying in sorrento and want to do a day trip to see positano, ravello, and almafi. We will be going in early may on a Wednesday. I had originally planned to take the bus there and back but now after seeing some comments about it being so hot and crowded and may be standing Im not so sure. Any advice with the ferries if so do i do on way there or back or both. I think I heard someone mention that if I take the bus that i should plan to visit one of the cities last because it is furthest out and that will make sure that we will get a seat on bus for ride home. We plan to spend whole day doing this so any ideas of what to do will help!

Early May should be a bit easier than in late June or July. BUT! I discovered a few years ago, and do it every year since, that taking the boat to Amalfi Town and then the bus back towards Sorrento gives you the best of both trips. On the way back make sure you sit on the driver's side for the best views. The problem will be in Positano, which is completely vertical. The bus lets you off at the top and picks you up there too. That could be quite a climb if you go all the way down to the water! Or, consider taking the boat back to Sorrento from Positano. IMHO the views from the water are really beautiful. The bus ride is like an amusement park ride - if you're into that sort of thing. And yes, if you sit on the wrong side, or get to the bus late, you'll sit on the wrong side or stand and see almost nothing. It is a beautiful way to spend a day anyway.

We did a great day trip from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast using a Rick Steves recommended guide - we were picked up in Sorrento, super nice and comfortable van - it was very nice- decent amount of time in each town. The drive is gorgeous.

We did the SITA bus in late september 2017 and it was awful- very crowded and hot. While we were there, the other couple with us used the City Sightseeing bus from Sorrento to Positano and Ravello and they said it was very nice- and only a few euros more. I would definitely spend the extra money to do either a Mondo tour or the city sightseeing bus (at the train station in Sorrento). Ravello is really magnificent and the farthest out from Sorrento.

I think the best is by bus from Sorrento to Amalfi coast and back by boat. Sit on the right hand side of the bus. The views are more awesome that way because bus ride on the right hand side of the road. Come to the bus station (next to train station) early so you can choose seats at the right.

I was in Sorrento in September and took the bus to Amalfi. I had really been looking forward to this part of the trip. Even after waiting in line at the bus station in Sorrento and missing the first couple of buses ( almost 90 to 120 minutes of waiting), I was still excited. We finally got on the bus and got a seat on the "right" side of the bus. About 10-15 minutes in, I became nauseous due to the curves in the road and the heat from the overcrowded bus. I knew I wasn't alone because the woman that was standing directly over my friend kept saying, "Are we there yet? I am going to throw up." It was hilarious (in retrospect). I'll be going back this fall and will go to Amalfi again but will be taking the boat in both directions. Some people we met did hire a car and driver and raved about it. Definitely pricey but probably worth it for two couples. They were able to stop along the way whenever they wanted, something you won't be able to do on the bus or on a tour.

Go by bus and return by boat. Make sure boats to Sorrento are running though. If not, return by boat back to Positano, then proceed by bus again back to Sorrento. If seas are rough and no boats at all can sail, do bus back and forth.

To see all three villages and make this work, first look carefully at the bus and ferry schedules.

You're going to be working with some relatively tight connections.
Keep in mind the ferry will save you some time if it's running. Be sure to check the weather the day beforehand.

Take the 9:00 ferry to Positano, Arrive 9:40. You'll have about 3 1/2 hours to explore the town.
Between 12:30-1:30 take either the bus or ferry to Amalfi. Then immediately take the next bus to Ravello. 30 minutes. Have lunch and wander for a few hours. Head back to Amalfi spend an hour then bus back to Sorrento. Try to take the second to last bus at 18:00. The very last bus leaves at 19:00. If you miss it, you'll have a very expensive taxi ride back to Sorrento.

This will not work taking the last ferry back as it leaves Amalfi at
16:45.

Buy the daily (24 hr.)bus ticket €6,40 it will pay for itself.

I, too, was miserably nauseous the whole bus ride. It is very curvy. Took the boat back home and was fine.

I vote for the ferry! It is fast and you can then take the bus between towns.

This is what I was thinking... Canyou all answer my few question. Plan on waking up early and taking city sight seeing bus from Sorrento to positano. We will then walk down positano after spending a few hours there and will take the ferry to almafi. We will then see almafi and hike up to ravello then take the ferry back to sorrento from almafi. How does this sound I can handle some bus ride but cant do for extremely long time or if hot and overcrowded with people. this is why im not doing sita bus. Anyone know how long bus ride is from Sorrento to positano and if the rest of plan sounds good?

We were in Sorrento in March. We took an 8 hour tour with Travel Etc. (https://traveletc.it/it). We looked into the Rick Steves Mondo Shared Tours (https://www.sharedtours.com/) but it was low season and they were not operating.

The Travel Etc. tour was fantastic. Picked us up at our hotel. Had enough time to see Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi without being rushed. Had a great guide (Roberto) that knew the history of the area and spoke good English. The van was very comfortable and held 20 people. Tour included a light lunch and water.

I looked into the ferry and bus options. I would not recommend it as you will spend too much time waiting for your connections and not have enough time to enjoy the beautiful cities. I think our tour only cost us €150 for two people.
