Any suggestions/opinions on whether to go to Genoa or Parma from Milan for a day trip? Is there another city anyone suggests more intersting for the day that's 1 train stop & not more than an 45-60min on a speed train? Already planning on Turin for one of the day trips.
Have you considered Bergamo?
Not quite understanding Question no. 2. Have you already been to Lake Como area??
Bergamo would probably be much more enjoyable to the average traveler than Parma, and certainly more than Genoa. And there's also Lake Como. Varenna is beautiful.
I haven't been anywhere in Italy except Venice. Would it be worth checking out Bergamo rather than Parma or Genoa for the day?
Can't comment on Genoa or Parma but we did go to Bergamo from Milan this summer for a day trip. Bergamo (the upper city) was fantastic! The price was 4,50 Euro on a regional train and it took about 45 minutes with no train changes. We took the local bus, for 1 Euro up to the upper city and walked back down to the train station in the late afternoon.
Thank you for all the suggestions
I second the Varenna suggestion. Follow Rick's guidebook info on how to get to Varenna from Milan-we did it as a day trip, followed Rick's instructions and it was a snap. Beautiful area to explore !
