Day trip: Rome to Orvieto in February / Questions

We will be in Rome for 6 full days in February and are looking to do 2 day trips. One of which is likely to be to Orvieto.

In Rick's Italy book it says there is a train from Rome that takes about an hour, but when I look at the Trenialia website for a Saturday train in February, it looks like the quickest train is 1h 47m (not departing until after 10:30am), the rest of the trains are all well over 2 hours.

Is there another trainline that I should be looking at? Or is this just what we are stuck with in February?

Is there any detriment to waiting to book the train tickets until the week that we are in Italy? Could the prices increase exponentially (like they do for Naples). We will be 2 adults and 2 children 14 and under, so they should be free.

Does the shuttle from the funicular to to the Pizza del Duomo in February? I understand that it should coincide with the funicular schedule. If we decide to walk it, how long is the walk? We don't mind some uphill walking

If we don't take the shuttle back to the funicular at the end of our visit, how long of a walk should we plan for?

Sorry for the numerous questions, I just want to do my best to maximize the time we have in town for the day. Thanks.

Someone else will need to assist you with your train questions, but if the funicular isn’t operational for any reason you can take the elevator from the parking area up to Orvieto. There is no charge.

That’s a regional train so price never changes and tickets can’t sell out
No need to purchase in advance

The 10:32 is an IC train-sort of like a fast train with reserved seats ( purchase in advance these can sell out)
There is a direct ( no changes) regional at 8:20 am that takes just under 2 hours
Others are all 1 or 2 changes from Termini

If you leave from Tiburtina you can get a direct

The station is Orvieto
If you book to Orvieto Centro that includes the funicular / bus ride to top

Trenitala is the only train company that services Orvieto

The walk from funicular into town is not much more than 15 min mostly uphill but there are things to see along the way

Thanks Christine!

I reckon that Rick needs to update the guidebook if there are no trains that can get there in an hour. That makes a big difference for people who are trying to take his advice and plan a day trip to this town.

Good to know there are no other train lines. But the other train station with the direct service is certainly a bit easier. I'll look at the schedules for this and see what kind of timing might work for us. The 'Orvieto Centro' ticket into which includes the funicular is helpful, I could not figure out what the difference was between that and a ticket to "Orvieto'.

If all else fails and it turns into too long of a trek to get there (we are already planning a long day to Pompeii and back), then I'll just look at something a bit closer and more direct. We were in Tuscany with the kids in Aug 2022 and had an amazing time, so a taste of a hill town while visiting Rome would be fun if we can make it work.

Orvieto is lovely
I hope you can make it work!

If you do leave from Termini on the IC note that the track it leaves from is really far from entrance-seriously long walk! Allow extra time

I see an IC train at 10:20 in 1 hour 13 minutes. You can't get any faster, but it is a bit too late. I would take the 8:20 regionale.

I do remember that now, Christine! (How are you, by the way?!)

Orvieto is what I would call a perfect daytrip from Termini. Did it in March 2017, where we left on a Regional train around 10:30, took about an hour 45, back around 7PM. In between we had lunch of cinghiale (wild boar) over homemade pasta at a no-name cafe, then walked around the cobblestone streets, finally touring the cathedral where the stained glass dazzled in the afternoon sun.

Hope to do this when we're in Rome in April if my travelmates are up for it.

Yes, a trip to Orvieto is worth it! Fabulous mosaics on the front of the cathedral. Interesting town perched on the tofu (spelling?)

We took the train from Rome Termini to Orvieto a couple of months ago. It’s an easy ride — once you find the Orvieto train inside the station. Walk all the way to your left to the big McDonalds in the station and when you get there, turn right. Keep going even when you think you can’t go further. if you get confused just keep asking for help. The station employees will do their best to direct you.

When you get to Orvieto, take the funicular up and then wait for the bus to town. (It’s easy to walk from the funicular exit into the old town instead of taking the bus, but it’s confusing for a newcomer.)

We stayed at a great place — Ripa Medici Apartments. Check them out at https://ripamedici.com/. So clean, comfortable and convenient — and a gorgeous view overlooking the valley. The owner is lovely and lives around the corner.

There are lots of good restaurants in Orvieto, and The Blue Bar is fun and friendly.

This was our third trip to Orvieto and we will go again! Enjoy your trip.
