DAY TRIP- Rome to Capri - La Grotta Azzurra

Hi, Im wanting to know if I take the first train from Rome in the morning and a late afternoon train back to Rome. Is this a trip which can be done and would it be worth while?

The Blue Grotto is fun to check out, but it is kind of touristy and a little bit cheesy. I think you could do it in a day trip from Rome if you really wanted to, but it would be quite a long day. Train to Naples is easy, then you would need to take a hydrofoil from Naples to Capri. At Capri you need to take a boat tour that gets you close to the Grotto, then you need to get onto a little row boat where they actually take you inside the Grotto. Can it all be done in one day? I think so, but it would really be a big effort and a very long day. Is it worth it? I would say no. Capri is worth visiting, is a beautiful little island, but you should spend a minimum one full day there, see the other sites, even spend the night if you can. Mount Solara is better than the Blue Grotto. Going all the way there to see the Blue Grotto for a few minutes and then leaving would not be worthwhile.

It's really too far for a day trip. You should consider an overnight if you want to do it. Lots of people consider going to Pompeii as pushing what should be done as a day trip and that takes much less time than going to Capri and visiting the Blue Grotto. Donna

I will make it 3-0. Just too far and too many transportation changes. Save it for the next trip.

Over the past five years we have spent about three weeks in Rome and still have not made it to the gardens. So you are just getting started.

With 8 days in Rome, you could do a daytrip to Ostia, another to Tivoli and Hadrian's Villa, and/or one to Orvieto. All of them are much more worthwhile than the Blue Grotto and very much closer.

I'd get me back to Tivoli, on a day when the sun is out all the hundreds of fountains will luscious. We love it there.
