I accidently booked two additional day into our trip and would like to spend one of those days somewhere other than Rome. I am considering an overnight or possible day trip. Think the over night would be nicer. Feeling it would help test my train skills. My hubby and I are on a 13 day My Way Tour and this is at the end of our trip. I was considering Orvieto or some place reasonably close we could train to. We then would return for our last day in Rome as not complicate things. Any suggestions would be welcome.

As far as I’m concerned, Orvieto is the #1 short trip destination from Rome. Overnighting is perfect.

Love Orvieto. It's a very attractive place to be but also has some very high-level sights. You will not be bored.

Tivoli is another option. Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este gardens are main attractions.

Orvieto is definitely worth an overnight stay. Because so many people day trip, the town clears out at night and is quite lovely. There is enough to see here to warrant a couple of days.

And if you wanted to make it an even easier overnighter, check the big bags somewhere, and just travel with a daypack or something of similar size.

Orvieto? Assisi? Siena? Lucca? All are wonderful places with so much history, beauty, culture, food (and of course wine and gelato) to offer. Honestly, for something so very different and powerful, I'd go to Assisi. I spent 2 weeks there every year as part of an international music festival. From the first day I realized that "I like me here."
