Hi,
Planning a day trip while staying in Rome.
Want to visit Pompeii, Pisitano, Sorrento and Capri/Blue Grotto in a day. What is the best itinerary if we take an early train from Rome to Naples?
Should we plan to spend the night?

Impossible to do in one day all of that. You are listing a 3-4 night stay itinerary from a hotel in Sorrento or somewhere else in the Amalfi Coast and want to do it instead from Rome? Not physical possible as a day trip, as an overnight borderline physically impossible and definitely not enjoyable or recommended ever.
You either have to plan spending multiple nights or need to pair down your list.

We just did those 4 sites from Sorrento, and we took 5 nights to do it. My opinion, anything further than Pompeii would be a long tough day trip. Maybe consider Pompeii and Vesuvius, or Pompeii and some sites back in Naples if it's just a day trip. If you do an overnight, then Sorrento is a good place to stay. There is lots of good food, shopping and tours to the area sites. In the end though, I'd spend a few more nights in Sorrento, instead of schlepping everything there for one night, then schlepping it back to Rome.
Bullet train from Rome to Naples then Circumvesuviano to Pompeii Scalvi.....
