My significant other and I are staying in Menaggio for three days and two nights in mid- October before heading to Venice, Florence and Tuscany. I am considering adding a third night so that we can add a trip on the Bernina Express to St. Moritz.
I am curious if it is best suited for a day trip, or if there would be somewhere along the return route that would be nice for an overnight?
What is the best/eaisest way to get to the Bernina Express from Menaggio?

Someone else may have better information than this, but it looks like your best option may be to take a ferry across the lake to Varenna, then walk to the train station and grab a train to Tirano, where you can catch the BE. See the post below for more details.

This could be an easy day trip if you opt to take the more frequent regional trains over the same tracks as the Bernina Express train, and also avoid the expensive seat reservation fee required for the Bernina Express. You get to St Moritz by 11:11 am, giving you a few hours and time for lunch, returning at 2:48 pm and back to Varenna in plenty of time to get the ferry back to Menaggio.
