Day trip ideas from Arco

My family and I will be in Arco, Italy for a week in September for the World Youth Climbing Championships. My daughter will continue to train and/or compete part of most of the days, but we should have a few blocks of several hours and one or two free days to sightsee. I would love some suggestions. Also, I'd appreciate anything else you can tell me about driving, traffic etc around Arco.

I don't think we will want to climb outside, although of course, Arco is known for that. What scenic drives, short hikes, day trips etc would you suggest? I know about the castle in Arco. We'd also like to see Milan, even if it is just for an afternoon. What would be the one or two things in Milan we should see? I also would love to go to Salzburg - is that "do-able" from Arco in one full day?

We'll fly in and out of Venice and might be able to see Padua or Verona on the way - what would you suggest? Anything other suggestions for stopping points between Venice and Arco?

The last afternoon will be in Mestre. We've been to Venice. My daughter and my husband didn't much care for it the first time, so I'm not sure I'll be able to drag them again. If you have any good arguments in favor of Venice let me know! I'd love to go again. I'd also appreciate suggestions for other sights around Mestre.

Milan would be about three hours driving from Arco. Or maybe you could drive to Verona or Brescia and take a fast train to Milan from there. The first place to see in Milan is obviously the Duomo with Galleria area. After there, it is your choice: in order to see the Last Supper fresco you would have to reserve a time slot and program your trip around it. Or have a walk to Castello Sforzesco, or a visit to Brera museum.

Arco to Salzburg would be five hours driving, so a very difficult day trip.

Obvious place to visit from Arco? Trento, Verona, Brescia. Bolzano is not Salzburg but already in the German culture area. Bressanone has a nice baroque bishop palace and a nearby baroque abbey with a top vinery, again it is not Salzburg but gives a taste of Salzburg and it is much closer. Innsbruck would be two hours and half driving and probably your northern limit. - If driving north past Innsbruck-Süd exit, remember to have an Austrian motorway sticker.

Traffic? A22 motorway gets really clogged during August weekends - at times traffic may come to a standstill and nothing moves anymore. In September it should not be so extreme, but if you can time your trips to avoid driving on A22 on Saturday and Sunday it could be prudent. Lake Garda area is popular with German tourists and accommodations are rented Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday, this generates extra traffic on weekends.

My personal advice? Have lunch or dinner at La Vineria de Tarczal (http://detarczal.com/) near Rovereto, 15 minutes driving from Arco. One of the better quality to price ratios in Italy. They also sell their wine made on the premises.

Thank you for the good advice!

I guess Salzburg is too far. I was there once on a day trip while skiing in Kitzbuhl. I wanted to see it again when all the fountains were not covered for the winter. I'll have to save that for a later trip I guess.

We may make it to Milan on our free day instead. Thanks for the suggestions, I will bring the list and be ready to make some of the shorter trips between my daughter's practice sessions. The restaurant looks nice (from what I' was able to read on -line), I hope we get a chance to have a meal there.

Thanks again.
