I'm planning a day trip from Venice to Verona by train. Should I go from Mestre to Verona, or Venice Santa Lucia station to Verona? Once I get to Verona, is the historic city centre within walking distance of the train station? Thanks, by the way, to Randy, Kerry and everyone else who responded to my previous question.
Mestre is on the mainland. If you want the main Venice train station, it's Santa Lucia. Either one works but Santa Lucia is the one "in town." In Verona, it's a 15 minute walk from the train station to Piazza Bra, and best to take the bus, which leaves from directly in front of the train station.
You have an interesting choice. Some of the very fast trains depart from Venezia Santa Lucia and some depart from Venezia Mestre. The very fast Cisalpino (CIS) train departs from Mestre. Santa Lucia and Mestre are 11 minutes apart by train.
Here's a suggested plan. Catch any train out of Venezia Santa Lucia at about 8:00am in the morning. A ticket would cost a few Euro to Mestre. Then, catch the CIS at 8:42am for Milan. It does stop at Verona Porto Nuovo an hour later. CLICK HERE for a sample train schedule.
In the afternoon, pick up a Eurostar (ES) or EuroCity (EC) train back to Venezia Santa Lucia. Avoid the "R" trains unless you want to take an hour longer on the train ride.
Thanks for your advice. Much appreciated!
