Day trip from Venice to Dolomites

This forum has been a blessing for so many trips. Thank you in advance for your help!!

While my husband and I have been blessed to travel in Italy several times...and have been to the Dolomites on our own...early next June we will taking out 14 year old grandson on his first trip to Italy. We are very aware that a day trip from Venice to Italy is very very limiting. However, we are getting up there in years, and would love to expose our grandson (even for just one long day) to the beauty of the dolomites. It's a sentimental journey for many reasons.

We have been looking at several tour companies that travel from Venice to the Dolomites on a day trip. We have found private and semi private tour companies. These tours state that it's anywhere from a 10-12 hour day round trip day...about 2 and half hours of driving each way. We can handle that. We do not want to rent a car and drive ourselves. We would be borrowing one day from a 4 day stay in Venice. While we agree you can spend many days in the dolomites, it's not feasible on this trip.

If you can please help, we are looking for tour company recommendations that you have used. We will be in Venice early June 2026.

Thank you kindly and happy travels,
Monica

Hi Monica,
What a lovely idea. It is a long day. There's no way around that.
One thought I had is the Cortina Express (timetables here: https://www.cortinaexpress.it/en/timetable/). You can do a round trip departing from Mestre or the Piazzale Roma up to Cortina in about 2.5 hours. The drive up is beautiful. The bus drops you off at the Olympic ice venue, which is near the centre of town and next two one of the lifts. Spend the day in Cortina, take a lift up to one of the restaurants (the lifts start running in June https://cortinadampezzo.it/en/news-en/summer-lift-openings/). From Cortina, you can take a taxi to Lake Misurina, which is over a pass and absolutely stunning and a fairly quick trip. Return to Venice on the Express late in the day. Not quite the same as a guided tour but it may do the trick?
In any event, have a wonderful time planning such a special day.

Thank you for your kind help!

I have looked into Day Tours from Venice and they are pricey!
LivTours has a private day trip that leaves Venice at 7 am. Still researching other companies. We just got home from Europe and our Get Your Guide tours were just ok. We might be taking on too much, so I'm only looking at 24 hour cancellation bookings.

I will look into the bus idea as you have suggested. Thank you for adding this option to our consideration for this trip with our grandson. Very kind and greatly appreciated.

Gratefully,
Monica
