I would like to take a day trip from Ascona to an Italian Lake Maggiore village. Has anyone done this ? Would appreciate any tips or advice.
Not sure why you would want to visit and Italian village on the same lake. You can take the train from Stresa to Locarno but it takes all day . You could rent a car for the day. Which village are you planning to visit?
Car rental would be the most logical for complete freedom of travel. However, if up for an adventure, you can take the train from Ascona to Laveno. A couple of changes, but you are there in 3 hours and no worries about driving, parking, etc. Leave early enough in the morning and you can catch a faster route - about 2 hours. And you get to see the beautiful countryside and relax. Take the ferry across to Intra. Cross back and catch a 7pm train back to Ascona.
You can do it by lake ferry. Schedules:
