Day trip from Sorrento to Amalphi -what is the best way to go ?

We family of 4 are planning to go(July 2011) from Sorrento to Amalphi for a day trip. I have heard of terrible long line for the local bus to/from Amlphi. I want to avoid this if possible and like to buy ticket on-line before going there. Up on google search I was not able to find any private coach/etc such services. Now there is private car/van you can rent but first we want to avoid driving and secondly for van with driver, cost is prohibitive. Anyone know what is best way to avoid lines ?

Do you mean Amalfi? Take the ferry. Quicker than a bus. Catch the ferry at the dock in Sorrento, just ask for the FAST ferry, or the trip takes 2x as long. Several ferries run each day, you can check the day before at the dock and buy your tickets for the one you'd like...buy round trip to make it easy.

At the moment there is a very limited boat service Sorrento to Amalfi. Rumours that there might be some improvement for July and August but???!!! Current service from Sorrento http://www.alicost.it/content/?id=6 Check again nearer your dates to see if they put any more boats on and when you are there visit the Tourist info office at the Foreigners Club for the latest situation.

Hi Ellen, yeah sorry I meant Amalfi :)
Do the ferries stop over Positano?

I keep having to sign back on! If you want an organised coach trip, this company runs one along the Amalfi Coast. You can buy tickets from travel agents in town. We use the one in Piazza Sant' Antonino, which you will pass on your way to the tourist office at the Foreigners Club! http://www.goldentours.it/en/daily_excursions.php

Jane, if it's not too late, I highly recommend Antonio Prudente and his company for a private driver. They are wonderful. His email is: [email protected] We lucked out when his was the taxi we caught at the train station on arrival in Sorrento in Sept. '09, and it turned out he does day trips. He speaks perfect English, tells great stories, has a great knowledge of the Amalfi Coast, stopped wherever and whenever we wanted. Buon Viaggio!

Linda, have you used the Golden Tours? I actually had corresponded with them and was debating on taking their Amalfi coast tour since I am traveling alone. They shared there would be 2 hours each spent in Amalfi and Ravello. If you went on this tour, did you feel this was enough time to explore those 2 cities for a day trip. It is my first time to this area. I want to experience the cities well, but realize in 3 days for this whole area I might just get a snapshot. Just curious.

Katie - It is some years since I did the organised trip along the Amalfi Coast but as an overview for a first time visitor they are a good idea and are very popular. A further benefit is that current reports coming out of the area say crowding and travelling on the local Sita buses is worse than usual. Last time I travelled on them, Oct/Nov last year, I hated the scrum to get on the bus back to Sorrento but at least we got a seat. People waiting at the stops between Amalfi and Positano were unable to get on the bus. And that was supposedly the quiet season! Both Amalfi and Ravello are small enough to have a comfortable walk around in 2 hours. Of course not enough but as you say a taster and there is always next time As far as Golden Tours is concerned we took a trip with them to Salerno and Paestum during our last visit and enjoyed the day. The guide was good, the bus comfortable and we had enough time in the new Museum and at the site. Edit - we found our fellow trippers to be a friendly bunch so maybe a good idea if you are on your own.

Does anyone know if you are guaranteed a seat on the 4:30pm ferry trip back to Sorrento from Amalfi ? I am concerned if this is the last boat back, what if it is overcrowded like the buses?

If you have a ticket for a specific sailing you will get a place. Maritime safety laws limit the number of tickets sold for each sailing.
