Day trip from San Gimignano

Hello all,

I’m working on finalizing plans for my trip to Italy with my mom in October. We have a free day while based in San Gimignano and was thinking that we could maybe spend a good part of a day somewhere on the coast. Any suggestions? I think we’d be most interested in wandering around a town, having lunch and just relaxing. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks,
Laura

If it is not already on your itnerary, Siena is close and fabulous. Also, Volterra is close, ancient and wonderful.

Pretty sure I responded on another forum as well, was there any interest in Livorno or the scenic drive?

Well, unless you live in a landlocked part of your home country, a chilly Mediterranean beach that's not as nice as many US beaches may not be worth a two-hour each way drive. When we took an October cruise (Rome to Barcelona), many of the summery businesses in the small (island) ports we stopped at were closed for the season. I would recommend that you focus on Tuscan hill towns. But if you want something different, there's always Pisa. Does your trip include Florence?

I can't tell if you meant something like Cinque Terre, or if you simply meant "sea beach." There's a huge difference.

Thanks everyone. Yeah we'll already be exploring places like Siena, etc. Was looking for something 'different' as we'll be in the hill towns for a week. Livorno looks like a good option if the weather's nice. Not sure that a day trip to Cinque Terre is worth it, although tempting. Do you think it'd probably a bit too far for a day trip? And yes, we already have Florence scheduled in.

Thanks!
