Day Trip from Rome to Tuscany

How doable is a day trip from Rome to Tuscany? My husband and I would love to spend a day sampling wines and taking a break from the city. Any advice on transportation? Recommendations on signing up for a full day tour versus arranging transportation and then doing our own thing?

Going to Florence is easy: 90 minutes each way by Frecciarossa. From there, a tour is your best bet otherwise car rental, making arrangements at the cantina, etc. have to be done. I have tried contacting cantine as a private person and they are not always responsive, especially in my experience in Chianti.

I woudl trust Walks of Italy. Haven't used them in Florence but I have in Rome several times. They have a full day Tuscan Tour but you have to get to Florence very early and you will get back to Rome very late.

Unless you are in Rome more than a week, such a day trip seems misplaced, IMO. Have you considered Orvieto? It's not Tuscany, but Umbria, and it is a classic hill town, only an hour from Rome. There may be wine tours out of there.

Rent a car a drive to Montepulciano and then stop by Orvieto (Umbria)
