Is there a way to do this by bus or train? How long does it take to get to Tivoli and do you have to get tickets ahead of time?
Are these two places near each other?

These are all in the same vicinity. Detailed travel directions are in both Rick's Italy book and his Rome book. Also, you can search this Forum, top of page, as others have asked directions before and forum posters have answered here before. Search for either Hadrian's Villa or Tivoli and I bet you'll find lots of good info.

See roninrome.com -- He had a detail and I mean detail down to the number of steps to take with pictures on getting to Tivoli. We followed it and it worked perfectly. Took train and bus outbound and train on return. Basically an all day trip but worth it. Don't need ticket ahead of time.
