Day trip from Rome to the Almafi Coast

Hello,

I will be in Rome for a week the first week of December and I am thinking of taking a day trip to the Amalfi Coast. I have been doing research on the area and I am trying to decide which towns to visit. I am thinking Sorrento is the best choice. I considered Positano, but it seems like it might be a hassle to get there for just 1 day. Any suggestions? I'm not really interested in sitting on a beach since it is the winter. We are going just for sight seeing and shopping.

Thanks,
Michele

Michele, Sorrento is not the Amalfi Coast, although it is a popular entry point to that region during the warmer months, and is a good base for tourists wanting to see Pompeii. Honestly? I wouldn't make this trip from Rome in December unless there was some very specific sightseeing you know you want to do. Daylight will be short, weather could be sketchy, and the ferries will not be running to the A.C., although SITA buses will be. I sure wouldn't do it just to shop.

That said, this might be helpful:
