Day trip from Rome to Positano

I was planning to book a tour with Viator, which would take us on a day trip from Rome to Amalfi Coast/Positano. The price is a bit steep. We'd taken the day trip from Rome to Pompeii/Amalfi Coast with Viator in 2011 and it was fantastic. However, we would like to explore a bit in Positano this time.
What is the most ideal route to get to Positano from Rome? We are staying in the vicinity of Piazza Navona. The train rides and buses seems complex. Any guidance/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I would say it's more tedious than complex. Perhaps your hotel can suggest something? Otherwise it's the train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, Circumvesuviana (same station, downstairs) train to Sorrento, bus to Positano. Count on at least three hours one way.

If you started out with public transport through Naples, then perhaps you'd keep heading south with bus or boat from Positano to Salerno (on the main train line), then circle back by fast train from Salerno to Rome (2-3 hours, depending on departure time).

Positano is not an ideal location for a day trip as the transportation options in that area are a bit "limited". The train rides and buses are not "complex" but they will be time consuming. You'll likely spend at least three hours in transportation each way, leaving only a short time for looking around.

However if you don't mind the effort to get there, this is the route I'd probably use......

  • High speed Freccia train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale (~1H:10M)
  • Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento (~1 hour) - Garibaldi is downstairs from Centrale so just a short walk.
  • Bus or car to Positano (~20M to 50M, depending on mode of transport). Bus will take the longest but you could also take a Taxi OR arrange for a private car service such as the Monetti Taxi listed in the guidebook. Be sure to arrange the return trip with them as well.

If you haven't taken the Circumvesuviana, it's a bit "colourful" and has somewhat of a reputation for pickpockets. If you take reasonable precautions you shouldn't have any problems. As an alternative you could also arrange the private car service to pick you up at Napoli Centrale, and in that case you'd have a much more comfortable trip to Positano.

Good luck!
