Day trip from Rome to Pompeii and Naples

I am traveling with my family of four. In order to keep things simple, I'm considering using a small tour company that can provide transportation and a tour of Pompeii. Any suggestions for a company? Have any of you used one and liked in the past? Or is this something I really should figure out logistics and do myself? Thank you in advance.

I have not seen any recent postings about tour companies for Pompeii. Most of the posters here will do Pompeii on their own because it is very easy to do from Rome. A long day, sure, but very direct and easy.

We just booked a tour with Tours of Pompeii (we will be there early April). We have been working with Louise and she has been wonderful - very punctual in her replies to our questions and very helpful. We are going with 7 kids, so wanted something that was private and could take us up the coast on our way home. They are coming right to our hotel at 7:30 in the morning and then will drop us off at our hotel that night. As we haven't actually gone yet, I don't have any experiences to share, but so far she has been great to work with (oh, and we don't pay until after the tour).
Good luck on your trip!

I did it on my own a few years ago. It's pretty easy. I just walked into the Rome train station, bought return ticket to Naples, then once in Naples I jumped on a local "Circumvesuviana" train to take me the rest of the way to Pompeii.

That being said, if you do a tour, it would probably be more fun to be shown around Pompeii with a guide. It's a pretty large sprawling site. If you find a tour that combines a trip up to Vesuvius, that's the one I'd go for.

Walks of Italy tours have been highly recommended in posts on this Forum as well as in RS guidebooks, They have an all day small tour leaving from Rome that includes several hours at Pompeii and then down the Amalfi coast to Positano. Since Naples is a quick train ride from Rome, perhaps you could visit Naples on a different day.
