On our last day before the flight home, we will have 2 nights, one full day near Fiumicino Airport near Rome. We could either spend the day much closer at Ostia Antica or take the train to Pompeii. Is the latter feasible? Or is it too far for the round trip by train plus the time to see Pompeii?
Anne, from Fiumicino, you are about 2.5hrs away from Pompei on three different trains. It will be close to 5.0hrs round trip.
A day trip to Pompeii is a long, long day. You would be better off to enjoy Ostia Antica and the area. Pompeii is great but you need more that a quick day trip to really appreciate it? My two cents.
We did it. However, we left from Termini Station around 8 AM and returned from Pompeii around 4 PM.
We have also seen Pompeii from Rome in a day. We left not terribly early in the morning and got there in time for an early lunch. Spent from around noon till closing seeing the ruins (it was beautiful in the setting sun) and then took the train home. Arrived back pretty late, around 9:30 or 10, but it was completely doable! I think it's worth taking the time. The multiple trains are not difficult and they are timed so that you don't have to wait long to get on the next one.
Thank you all. It's very tempting. We picked our last place to be close to the airport and with airport shuttle so we don't have to worry about that. It will depend on how tired we are after 6 weeks travel, or if we are still eager for one more fabulous place to visit in Italy. This helps.
We didn't do Pompeii, but we did do Herculaneum and Mt Vesuvius as a day trip from Rome. Started early and we were back by probably 7-8pm (and this was after missing our stop and having to wait an hour for a train to come take us back...it was a Sunday). We walked from the train stn to Herc, spent maybe 3 hrs there til hunger forced us to go find a late lunch, had a lovely pizza, took a van ride (from outside the train station) to Vesuvius and walked to the summit...I think they gave us about 50-60 min. Was a long day, but we really enjoyed it. (Now, this was 2008, and maybe things are better, but there was absolutely nothing to eat at Herc - but I think they were doing renos at the visitor center, but I would def pack snacks and water...even for Pompeii)
I'm assuming you have been to Rome previously but if not, I would spend the day before you fly home in Rome itself as there's so much to see. If you are so inclined to see an ancient city, then I would visit Ostia Antica but I personally would not visit Pompeii as a day trip from Rome. I would save Pompeii for a future trip where you can combine it with the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento. Have a great trip.
