Day Trip from Rome to Pompeii

Any tips for a day trip from Rome to Pompeii? I am open to either booking a tour from Rome or Naples, OR doing it on my own. I read about a few different trains in the RS book to get to Pompeii; has anyone followed his tips on this? I am leaning toward using public transportation, but since I only have a day, I am also open to booking a tour if that's less complicated. Thanks for any advice!

Going to Pompeii on your own from Rome is very easy. There is no reason to hire a company to take you there unless that's what you want to do.

First, book the earliest train going from Rome to Napoli centrale. This train will take just over an hour travel time. Once in Naples head downstairs, following the crowds, to the circumvesuviana train. Buy your tickets along the way at either a machine or a ticket window. Once at the downstairs station go to binario 4 and take the train heading to Sorrento. The Pomepii scavi villa de misteri is about a half hour ride from the station. Once you exit the train just walk up the street to your right and you'll see the entry to the site. It's really very easy.

If you want a tour of the site you can easily book that at the ticket window. There are lots of guides to choose from so just talk to a few and pick the one you like the best.

Many people have been successful with those tips in the book, so Donna is not alone in encouraging you to save money and set your own schedule by using public transport. You can find other, similar forum discussions by searching above for "Rome Pompeii. "
