My husband and I would like to find a private guide for a tour of Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio - someone to either take us from Rome, or meet us in Orvieto. It will be a Sunday trip - May 16th. Any recommendations for a private guide? Thanks.
Hi Sharon. I researched the exact same thing last year but the cost was prohibitive for me; it was around $500-700.00 for the day & I just couldn't justify that. I wish I remembered the names of the people I contacted. Sorry. Just contact the major tour companies (Context, Through Eternity, etc); most of them have private guides that you can hire. You might also contact Ron in Rome & see if he can suggest someone.
Sharon, you really don't need a private guide. Maybe for a city such as Rome, otherwise they are expensive and for hilltowns such as Orvieto or Civita, they are really unnecessary. If you buy Rick's book Italy 2010 for around $20, it guides you through both cities. Take the train from Rome to Orvieto, I think around 1 1/2 hrs and the book will guide you everywhere. Rick gives excellent directions for getting around and what to see.
I agree, getting to Orvieto from Rome is simple. And then you take the bus right from Orvieto to Civita di Bagnoregio at a price of 4 euro's round trip. No reason for a guide. Spending the night in Orvieto? Check out Casa Selita B&B
