Day trip from Rome to Naples, Family of 4

We are taking our first trip to Rome this August and would love to take a day trip to Naples. Should we take a train or rent a car? Our daughters are 18 and 14. Opinions and advice appreciated about transportation or anything else about this day trip.

As the signs in New York City say about parking, don't even think of renting a car for this daytrip. Driving in Rome is bad; driving in Naples is far worse. Driving (when you include gas, parking, and tolls) will also be much more expensive than advance purchase train tickets, as well as slower.

What you want to do is buy advance tickets from Trenitalia or ItaloTreno. The trip takes about 90 minutes each way on high speed trains. Rick's books have all the details on logistics as well as his suggested highlights for the day (don't miss the Archeology Museum).

If you need help buying the advance tickets, post another note.

Train, by all means. We're traveling the same, with 2 teenage daughters, in July, and though we'll have a car for the whole Italy trip, we'll be turning it in before the Rome/Naples part of the trip. The train runs early and often.
