For Saturday, April 19 - what is the best train to take for a day trip for 3 people?
Hello ljroberts73, and welcome to the forum!
You can buy fast train tickets from either Trenitalia or .Italo from this line.
https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html (Use Italian city names - Roma, Firenze - for best results)
https://www.italotreno.com/en
Ticket can be bought in advance at a (sometimes significant) discount trading flexibility for price. Tickets are generally available 2-3 months before the date of travel.
There are many options a day and both companies have useful apps as well.
Hope that helps,

Thank you!
Did you realize that's Easter weekend? And the Pope's Jubilee will be adding more visitors? Make sure you purchase any entry tickets in advance.
Have a great trip! Safe travels.
Appreciate the heads up. We have purchased all tours already and this is an added day trip for us while visiting. Should be a busy and exciting time!
I didn't realize it was a holiday weekend. While you should be heading away from the craziness I would definitely recommend buying your train tickets in advance and then just living by the reserved times on your tickets. It's less spontaneous to travel that way but this is one of the few times tickets for the fast train might actually sell out - especially heading back to Rome.
With the time constraints I would look to reserve tickets for any "must sees" in Florence unless you already have that covered.
Have a great trip,
