I'll be in Rome in mid November and would like to take a day trip to Assisi. Has anyone done this? Is it better to take a train or a bus? How long does it take?
I took a bus, but it was a private rental as part of a group. It's easily going to take the entire day no matter how you do it. It's well worth it though. Assisi is beautiful, and I've only seen it in the winter.
If you're planning on going to Tuscany or as part of the trip then it may be more convenient to go from there.
It's about a 2hr-2.5hr. trip from Rome. Here's what a SAMPLE TRAIN SCHEDULE looks like. Assisi is just beautiful. It was the highlight of our trip to Northern Italy. Hint: Many travel books have you start at the basilica and walk up to the top. I suggest that you buy a rountrip bus ticket in the bookshop at the train station, walk outside to the bus stop and then take the Line C bus to the top. Then, you can walk down. Much more fun. Wonderful shops and a couple of great gelato shops.
