day trip from Rome to Amalfi coast

Can anyone recommend a guided day trip that picks up my husband and I from Rome and tours the amalfi coast and returns us back to Rome?

Hi Dana. If you cannot find one from Rome, just go to the marina at Naples (you can take a train to Naples) and you will find tours from there to the Amalfi Coast. I have not gone yet, but I am planning to go from Naples and there are a ton of excursions on the internet from Naples.

Count on two hours by train to Naples, though and then at least half an hour to get to the Marina. Factor that same time in for your trip back. That's at least five hours before you even get to some kind of tour.

Not a recommended day trip.

I agree with Doug. I think you'll want more than a day to enjoy the Amalfi Coast. I've been to Amalfi a couple times, the first for 2 days, the second time for 3 or 4 days. I stayed in Amalfi the first time & Atrani the second time. Neither trip was enough time. We never made it to any of the other towns including Positano.

If you have a long trip planned, I would recommend going to the Amalfi Coast towards the end. Part of why I enjoyed it so much, is because up to that point, every day was very busy sightseeing. Getting to Amalfi was very relaxing. No itinerary, the culture and the towns were the main draw, and one of my favorite places.

I would recommend taking a bus (or walking the hundreds/thousands of steps) to Ravello & trying the Limoncello.

Same as Doug and Antuany: Exploring the "Amalfi coast" as a day trip from Rome has not, in the past, been recommended on this forum or in Rick's books. Even Rome to Pompeii is a long day trip, but people here recommend it all the time--it's within the realm of a reasonable choice. On this forum, we'd like to think we're getting beyond the saccharine approach: "Any idea you can come up with sounds good to us, we'll support it and tell you how to do it, and we're sure you'll have a great day!"So my advice would be: If you want to see the Amalfi, spend a couple of nights in Sorrento, Amalfi, or Positano. The area has so much to offer!(However, if you're still not convinced by this rant, or the less obsessive advice above of Doug and Antuany, then here's what you can do--I'm not recommending this, just trying to be helpful: Pay whatever it costs to hire a private driver to pick you up at your Rome hotel, do this thing, and drop you off at your hotel that night. I doubt anyone here has done it, so all we can tell you is Google around for a private driver who is willing to go that far, for a cost that you feel like paying. If that doesn't work, look around for a private driver after you get into Rome. You'll need a private driver to make this work, it will take too much time using public transportation.)

Thanks guys for all the great advice! We are staying five days in Italy, so what do you guys recommend? Rome and Florence? Or Rome and Amalfi coast? I don't think we can do all three in this short time.

You can't do all three in five days. If you like museums and art history go to Florence. If you like beautiuful coast scenery, go to Amalfi. Sorrento can be reached by train, many travelers sleep there; seeing the Amalfi coast beyond Sorrento can be done by bus tour, private driver (Rick's recommendation in his Amalfi video), or rental car (but parking is difficult in the Amalfi towns).

Dana,

I most definitely agree with Kent. With only five days, it wouldn't be practical to try and see Rome, Florence and the Amalfi coast in such a short time.

The trip from Rome to Florence is much easier as a day trip if travelling via EuroStar Italia or "fast" trains, as it's only about 1.5 hours or so. Travel to the Amalfi coast is somewhat more "complicated". As the others have mentioned, you'd need to take the train to Naples to begin with. From there you could either hire a Driver or continue on the Circumvesuviana (commuter train) to Sorrento. I believe there are listings for private drivers in Sorrento in the Guidebooks. Taking a daytrip to the Amalfi coast is certainly possible, but it would be a LONG day.

If this is your first trip, there's LOTS to see and do in Rome, so you could spend your time there or perhaps take an easy day trip to Orvieto or Ostia Antica.

Good luck and happy travels!

Another option, depending on what's most important for you to see could be Cinque Terre. I think it's relatively close (2 or 3 hours) from Florence. It's on the coast, and some say it's even more beautiful than the Amalfi Coast. I've never been there (going in May), but I think a few people on here have done that as a day trip.

For sure the Cinque Terre are not as beautiful as Costiera Amalfitana! If you are chosing, there IS no choice! Amalfi is much the preferred one! The Costiera is the most beautiful in the Europe for sure! The only coast I know in the world that is more beautiful than the Amalfi Coast is the one of Cape Town in Sudafrica! I am on holiday there now and it is like a dream! The spiagge at Blowbergstrand, Kommetjie and Kogel Bay are unbelievable! The food has been beautiful, more than anywhere ever for me! I never want to leave, which I am to do Monday :-( But for sure, if you can choose in Italia, Amalfi not Cinque Terre! Both very beautiful for sure, and the towns just as beautiful at both these, but the coast of Amalfi shines! It is magnificent in a way Cinque Terre is not! Even more than Dalmatia or Corsica or Santorini too I think. Europe's most of the beautiful!

SORRY! I was paying no attention at all when browsing around this site! I hope she made the right choice and had a wonderful time to enjoy the beaches! Furore is my favourite of them!
