Orvieto is popular, or Castel Gandolfo, Tivoli, Ostia Antica (barely outside of Rome).

Since this is your first trip any of the sites mentioned by Laurel would give you a wonderful day trip from Rome. Which you want to see would depend on your expectations.

Orvieto... charming hilltop town.
Train 1hr17m

Tivoli...Villa d'Este. Beautiful
fountains and gardens.
Hadrins Villa...
archaeological site.
coralbus. 50min.

Ostia Antica ruins, good substitute
For Pompeii and quick train ride
From Rome. 1hr 10min.

I was in Orvieto for a couple of nights in late 2016, and recommend it highly.

Or ... There's so much to see in Rome, why look for a day trip ? Just absorb Rome.

If all you have is a day, it's one of the most exciting days Europe has to offer. Start at 8:30 at the Colosseum. Then explore the Forum, hike over Capitoline Hill, and cap your "Caesar Shuffle" with a visit to the Pantheon. After a quick lunch, taxi to the Vatican Museums, then head to St. Peter's Basilica (open until 19:00 April–Sept). Taxi back to Campo de' Fiori for dinner. Finish your day lacing together all the famous floodlit spots. Note: This busy plan is possible only if you reserve and print your tickets to both the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums in advance.
Hope it helps :)

You guys are GREAT.. thank you so much. I have three full days and nights in Rome but I wanted to venture out see something else one of those days. We will be on a trip primarily to Greece with what was supposed to be a one hour layover in Rome (which I turned into three days)
I will research each placed named😊
Our trip is mid November-FYI
If I enjoy being there half as much as reading about being there it will be a trip of a lifetime.

Since you'll only be there three days, my advice would be to just stay in Rome. But if you need a change of scenery, then Ostia Antica would be my first choice as it will not really consume an entire day.

We really enjoyed walking along the Appian Way (via Appia Antica)

I had a great day biking outside Rome on a guided tour to Aqueduct Park, the Appian Way and catacombs and a goat farm, where we enjoyed wine and cheese. You’ll use electric assist bikes, which makes the ride easy. Just google bike tours Rome.

Another easy day trip is Ostia Antica.
