My husband and I will be in Rome for 10 days this September. We’d like to take a day trip into Umbria. Lots of recommendations for Orvieto. Should we plan a full day in Orvieto or is there another town you recommend combining it with? Is there a tour guide you would recommend for this trip? Thanks!
Orvieto is deserving of a night or 2 so filling a full day there makes sense
No tour guide needed, use RS guidebook
Assume you will take the train?
Rick does a good job of covering Orvieto in his guide to Italy. For some reason, I don't think Orvieto is covered in his guidebook dedicated to Rome. Orvieto has a lot of sights; it will keep you busy. In planning your time, be aware that the train station is at the bottom of the hill on which the historic center is located. You need to take either the funicular (more fun) or the bus up the hill, which will add about 15 minutes to the travel time in each direction.
As of 2015, there was a branch of the town's tourist office located very near the train station.
Another vote for staying in Orvieto for at least 1N if not 2N. The cathedral, Etruscan underground., and St. Patrick's well are very good places to visit and wil take a full day. We stayed 2N and wish we had a third night as the town is lovely to see at night. Have fun on your trip!
