Day trip from Rome or Naples to Anzio and Monte Cassino

Covid permitting, we hope to get to Italy for two weeks in early September. As a history buff, I would like recommendations for a day tour to Anzio and Monte Cassino. A tour company or someone with a military history background would be preferred. Thanks!

We stayed i night at Edra Palace Hotel in Cassino in 2018. I did not realize the historical significance of the area until we were checking out, when I noticed in the lobby some artifacts from the battle.
I don't know of any tours from Rome or Naples but perhaps you could contact the hotel info@edrapalacehotel.it and they may be able to give you some tour information. Also you could check with your local Legion.

My sister and I drove from Rome down to Anzio as a day trip back in October 2010. We picked up a rental car at the airport and drove straight there - easy driving all the way. Nowadays, Anzio is a beach town and in October it was deserted, which actually made it all the more atmospheric. Our dad served was a medic with the 33rd field hospital, and although he never talked much about his time in "Hell's Half Acre", we knew enough to know we had to pay tribute. I've read nearly every history book written about Anzio during WWII so it was interesting to simply wander around the harbor area and beaches on our own. We also visited the Commonwealth Cemetery which was rather moving, and I was so happy to see that it's kept in immaculate condition. Sadly, we weren't able to visit the American Cemetery, but I intend to our my next trip. If you'd like to see a few photos from my visit to the Commonwealth Cemetery, I've attached a link: https://curiouslydifferent.wordpress.com/2014/06/06/on-this-day-the-70th-anniversary-of-d-day/

we have something in common, Carolyn. My father was a British Commando and after Sicily he made his way north and was involved in Monte Cassino in the days before the big attack, and made his way further north. He survived what was a very very difficult operation. He knew all about Anzio.

I researched this for our Italy trip in 2019. There were very few options at that time. Based on TripAdvisor, I emailed with Daniela from Anzio Tours. As there were only 2 of us, her prices were a bit steeper than we wanted to do at that time, but she seems to have an excellent reputation.

There was also a very thorough report on TripAdvisor from a couple who had done it themselves. They included their route and some of the pros and cons. I had some email exchanges with the poster and she was very responsive. We eventually decided to just do some tours in Rome as our time frame was the beginning of the trip and I learned the hard way not to schedule intense tours while we’re still adjusting to jet lag.

Thanks to all who have responded. Have not yet found a suitable tour. Emailed Danila who was very nice, already booked, and yes, a bit pricey. May just rent a car in Rome and go on my own. 😊

Fellow travelers - As travel to Italy in September is beginning to look possible, I wanted to again ask the community for feedback on a Rome-Anzio-Monte Cassino-San Pietro-Rome day trip. I checked with a Rick-recommended car and driver but the 500 euros for the day seemed high. I am thinking about making this a personal driving adventure, renting a car at Termini train station. I've driven in parts of England and Wales, so I think I could make this round trip junket. Any thoughts and advice on getting in and out of Rome on a Friday? I don't intend long visits at any of these locations. I just want to look around, take a few pix and say I was there. As always, thanks for your comments and counsel.

I'm curious, did you decide to go on your own?
