My niece and I will be in Rome from 12/28 to 1/4 and would like to take a day trip. Based on our schedule so far, it looks like January 2 will be free for a quick trip. I'm worried about sights/restaurants being closed that close to the new year holiday. Can anyone offer advice on a fun place to visit that time of year? Will be have trouble finding things to do, places to eat? Thanks!!
No worries about closures. Only Dec 25 and Jan 1 get a might shut down. Take a look at this recent thread for related info.
Orvieto is a perfect day trip from Rome. Not too far, a totally different type of town, very charming. Should be plenty open and probably very busy.
Check out Hadrian's Villa and Tivoli. Also Ostia Antica
Ostia Antica can be done easily and quickly using public transit from Rome. Should consume only 3/4 of a day and then you are back in Rome where things are sure to be open.
If I'm interpreting its website correctly, Ostia Antica is closed on Mondays, and January 2, 2017, is (unfortunately) a Monday. That's going to be a problem, I think, because I believe Monday is a common closing day in Italy. You may do best looking for sights that are not government-run. Or heading to a picturesque nearby city or town where the "sight" is a nice historic district to wander through. They can't close those.
OOOPS! Didn't realize the 2nd was a Monday. Sorry about that.
